Kindergarten Elephants

Awesome Elephants!

Kindergarten students in Ms. Kerwick's class enjoyed creating fun elephants. They combined art and movement by acting out different body parts of an elephant. Also, they enjoyed learning to make the color grey by mixing black and white. This project was a great way to practice drawing and cutting skills.

The students used a sponge brush to paint the elephants.

Each student created a pattern at the top and bottom of the paper.

Kindergarten Caterpillars

The Very Hungry Caterpillar

Art and Literacy

First, Mr. Giannetto read the students the Eric Carle book The Very Hungry Caterpillar. Next, each Kindergarten student drew a large apple and leaf. Each drawing was painted with watercolors. After they dried, they were cut out and glued to blue paper. Finally, the caterpillar was created and glued into place.

1st Grade: Mouse Paint

Primary and Secondary Color Mice

Mr. Giannetto read the book Mouse Paint to each first grade class. The book tells the story of three mice who jump and dance in jars of paint and in the process learn a lot about mixing colors. While combining art and literacy, this lesson also was a great way to review the primary and secondary colors. First, each student drew three mice and painted them using primary or secondary colors. After they dried, they were cut out and glued to white paper. Next, details were added to each mouse using markers. Finally, a cat was created and glued to the top of the page. The cat is meant to be peeking over the paper and ready to chase the mice.

Kindergarten Snowmen

Printing with Cups

Kindergarten students had fun printing with cups. They dipped the cups into white paint and printed circles to create snowmen. Then they used a Q-tip to paint snow, and add the eyes, mouth, and buttons.  Finally, details were added such as hats, arms, and a carrot nose.

Kindergarten Self-Portraits

Self-Portraits

Kindergarten students enjoyed creating self-portraits. First, they made either a shirt or a dress. They had fun gluing down fabric swatches and discussing texture - "how something feels." Next, each child chose a skin color, hair color, and eye color. All items were glued into place and finishing touches were added. Finally, they filled out the sentence strip to complete the project.

2nd Grade: Dr. Seuss

Read Across America at Young School.

Second grade students drew The Cat in the Hat step-by-step with Mr. Giannetto. They enjoyed combining art with language arts .

I'm very proud of their work!
