Gingerbread S.T.E.A.M.

Team Teaching S.T.E.A.M. with Mr. Giannetto and Mrs. Barron

S.T.E.A.M. = Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math

Challenge: To keep the Gingerbread man safe from different types of weather!

Weather Choices: earthquake, wind, rain/flood, cold

Materials: You may pick up to 4 different types of materials to protect your gingerbread man.

Illustration: Draw how you plan to protect your gingerbread man from the harsh weather. You may glue or tape materials to or around your cookie.

Prediction: Will your gingerbread man survive being exposed to the harsh weather condition you selected? We'll be testing each scenario to see if you successfully protected your cookie.

Outcome: Were you successful? Did your gingerbread man survive the harsh weather conditions? Why or why not?

Each group selects their four materials to use to protect their cookie. Which materials will best protect it?

The students begin to create their protective structures.

It was great to see the students working together and problem solving. They had fun brainstorming ideas for how to best protect their cookie.

These students below are creating a structure out of construction paper and styrofoam.

The students have decided to line the inside of the structure with fur to protect the gingerbread man in case he falls during the earthquake.

Mr. Giannetto explains that each experimental structure will be tested.

The students are proud of their protective enclosures. Will the gingerbread man survive after we expose him to the harsh weather conditions?

Below the gingerbread men are pictured while one is also inside of each structure. Will he survive? One team laid the cookie down in the house so he wouldn't fall and break during the earthquake. Another team used plastic to surround the gingerbread to protect it during the rain/flood. The cookie at the bottom is protected with fur to keep him warm in the cold.

Now it's time to test our experiments. Will our gingerbread man survive an earthquake, flood, and extreme cold?

In the video below we are creating an earthquake. Will our gingerbread man stay in one piece?

Below the gingerbread man is headed into the freezer to see if he will survive in a cold climate.

Will the gingerbread man survive the rain or a flood?
